In the field of social sciences research it is very important to join knowledge from several interdisciplinary areas for obtaining, finally, practical results that imply benefits in the quality of life of people. In this sense, Polibienestar Research Institute from the University of Valencia (www.polibienestar.org) is currently working and participating in projects with the aim of improving the efficiency of healthcare systems and the quality of life of elderly people through the participation of professionals from an interdisciplinary team (physicians, technologists, computer specialists, nurses, social workers, etc.). On one hand, in the Valencian Region (Spain) have been tested screening instruments to detect elderly patients at risk of future hospitalization through computerized health information systems at primary care and hospitals. The main impacts of the application of these tools are to prevent hospital readmissions in elderly population, reduce health costs related to admissions that are potentially predictable and to improve the management and the efficiency at healthcare systems and their coordination with social services systems. For the other hand, it is currently being developed at European level a proposal of installing user-friendly technologies at elderly homes aimed to improve the elders’ quality of life, to reinforce their social inclusion and to make possible they live for longer time with independence in their houses. In this way, through the application of new resources and new technologies the efficiency of social and health services could improve, and they could contribute to optimize their use and management, as well as to improve elders’ quality of life.
